1 Peter 4:6-10

‍6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.

8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.

Commentary on 1 Peter 4:6-10

The fall of the Jewish people and their nation, as foretold by Jesus, was very close at hand. In the same way, the reality of death and judgment is near for everyone, and this truth should shape how we think. Knowing that our lives are short should lead us to be self-controlled in worldly matters and sincere in our faith.

Because everyone has faults and shortcomings, love is essential—it helps us overlook, forgive, and bear with one another. Without this kind of love, conflicts and divisions would easily arise, stirred up by Satan. However, love does not erase our own sins or earn God’s forgiveness; it is not a substitute for repentance.

The Christian life is both important and challenging work. The goodness of God, our Master, and the greatness of the reward we are promised should move us to serve Him with seriousness and dedication. In everything we do, our main goal should be to honor God.

A person who lives only for themselves—focused on reputation, profit, and selfish goals—will ultimately find life unstable and empty, since those things are temporary and will pass away. But the one who fully gives their life to God can confidently say that the Lord is their true portion. Only the glory found through Christ is lasting and eternal.
